Travelers flying through Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) can finally breathe a sigh of relief—and enjoy a lot more breathing room. The airport has officially wrapped up its $608 million Terminal Lobby Expansion (TLE), the largest passenger-facing construction project in its history.
After five years of construction walls and detours, the “Queen City” airport has unveiled a transformed space designed to handle the region’s exploding growth.
Here is a look at the major capacity and comfort improvements you will experience on your next trip.
More Space, Less Stress
The project was critical for an airport originally built to serve only a fraction of today’s passenger volume. The expansion has added 175,000 square feet of new space and renovated another 191,000 square feet of the existing terminal.
- Consolidated Security: Gone are the five cramped checkpoints. They have been replaced with three large, high-efficiency checkpoints featuring 21 screening lanes (including 11 automated lanes) to speed up the TSA process.
- Expanded Ticketing & Baggage: The ticketing area has been widened for better flow, and the baggage claim now features eight high-capacity carousels to get you on your way faster.
“Fit for a Queen”: Comfort & Aesthetic Upgrades
The centerpiece of the expansion is the new Queen’s Court, a sun-drenched gathering space that brings the iconic Queen Charlotte statue back inside to greet travelers.
- The Queen’s Court: A massive open area featuring large windows, terrazzo flooring, and comfortable seating options—including the airport’s signature rocking chairs and charging stations.
- New Dining: You can now grab a bite before security at the new Queen’s Kitchen (a full-service restaurant), along with grab-and-go options like Dunkin’.
- Weather Protection: A new 146,000-square-foot canopy covers the roadway, protecting passengers from the elements during drop-off and pickup.
- Easier Walking: Two new overhead pedestrian bridges and underground walkways now seamlessly connect the Hourly Parking Deck to the terminal, keeping pedestrians safely away from vehicle traffic.
Why It Matters
For years, CLT has been known for its tight connections and crowded lobby. This project finally aligns the airport’s infrastructure with its status as one of the busiest hubs in the world. Whether you are a business road warrior or a family heading on vacation, the “front door” to Charlotte is now modern, spacious, and ready for the future.
